Craig Finn

Craig Finn - Clear Heart Full Eyes In July 2011, I went to Austin Texas to make a record. The Hold Steady was on a four month break, and I wanted to try something a little different. Earlier in the year, I had written a bunch of songs that were outside of the norm for The Hold Steady, a little quieter and perhaps more narrative. I also wanted to gain some experience and insight into the process of making a record by working with new people. It was July in Austin. It was hot. Really hot. I had enlisted Mike McCarthy to produce the record. I really admire his work and his thoughts on songs and recording. Prior to arriving, I had sent Mike acoustic demos of 23 songs. They were very rough recordings, just acoustic guitar and vocals recorded live into my laptop. The songs had mostly been written in the first half of 2011, when I was experimenting with trying to write a new song every day. When I arrived in Austin, we trimmed the list down to 14 songs and made simple but good sounding recordings of each of these, each live with just acoustic and vocal. Then we talked about possible instrumentation and arrangements. We listened to records. We conceptualized and talked about what we were hearing in our heads. We sketched out rough ideas The next Monday, four musicians showed up: Josh Block, Jesse Ebaugh, Ricky Ray Jackson, and Billy White. Mike had chosen them, and he chose well. We said hellos and got to work. We moved quickly. I would show them the song and they would learn it, and quickly we were rolling tape. I sang the vocals live in the studio, something I hadn't really done before. I don't believe any song took more than three takes. These players brought a ton of enthusiasm and energy to the recording. It was really exciting to watch and hear them play together. We averaged a couple songs a day. By that Friday evening we had 14 songs tracked, including the vocals. We spent a few days listening and then did a few overdubs. We drove around in Austin, listening to rough mixes. I left Austin three weeks after I arrived. It was still really hot. When considering the songs as a whole, I realized that a lot of the songs deal with displacement, and people that are struggling while out of their element or comfort zone. A lot of the songs are about being alone. This is all pretty fertile ground for a musician that spends a lot of time on tour. It's also telling about the way we made this record, going to a friendly but fairly unfamiliar place to work with all new people. I'm calling this record "Clear Heart Full Eyes". It's a juxtaposed reference to Friday Night Lights, a TV show that excited and moved me and also happened in Texas. Further, "Clear Heart" signifies honesty and transparency, and "Full Eyes" suggests experience. Thus, it's about being optimistic and open without succumbing to the weariness or doubt that comes with age and experience. To me, that is what it's all about. I hope you enjoy the music. I am very proud of it. Thank you. Craig Finn Brooklyn NY 10.24.11 Ps. The Hold Steady are currently playing shows and writing for our sixth record, which we hope will come out in 2012.

Bombay Bicycle Club
Thu, 08 Mar 2012 21:00:00 +0000

Bombay Bicycle Club

Bombay Bicycle Club, the unexpected break-out band who have took the UK by storm this year, have announced plans for the US release of their acclaimed debut album I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose. The album will be released in the states on August 31st via Portland based label Arena Rock Recording Company. This U.S. release will finally give American music fans an opportunity discover what critics and fans in the UK have been touting as one of the most exciting new bands for the past year, even awarding Bombay Bicycle Club the crown of "Best New Band" at the 2010 NME Awards, beating out The xx, La Roux, The Big Pink and Mumford and Sons. The U.S.version of I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose will feature three exclusive bonus tracks not available on the UK release. Bombay Bicycle Club's skyrocketing journey to indie rock notoriety started in 2007 when the band, made up of Jack Steadman (vocals, guitars), Jamie MacColl (guitars),Suren De Saram (drums), and Ed Nash (bass), from North London self-released their debut EP, 2007's The Boy I Used to Be followed by 2008's Indie Chart-topping EP How We Are. After the success of both releases,Bombay Bicycle Club took to the studio to record their debut full length with studio veteran Jim Abbiss, the producer of landmark debut albums by Arctic Monkeys, UNKLE, Kasabian and Adele. The record encompasses a garagey and intimate feel punctuated with sonically epic and soaring moments. From the dizzying swoops and morning-after ruefulness of opener "Emergency Contraception Blues" to the ambitious, open-tuned, Appalachian folk feel of "The Giantess," the album thrums with subtle invention and quiet emotional intensity. It's an outstanding debut, brimming with youthful urgency, honesty and romance. Like its bashful creators, I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose doesn't feel the need to shout, scream or bluster to be heard. Instead, its chiming chords and sighed melodies blaze proudly like flushed cheeks on a cold day.

Cults is an indie pop duo from New York City, best known for their first single, "Go Outside," which was named Best New Music by Pitchfork. According to Pitchfork, "'Go Outside' has the innocent and balmy feel that brings to mind Swedish indie pop, with a tinkling glockenspiel cutting through humidity, an appealingly lazy bassline and joyous sing-along vocals." Released as a limited-edition 7" on bright yellow vinyl, the single (b/w "Most Wanted") sold out at the pre-order stage.

The Slackers
Sat, 31 Mar 2012 21:00:00 +0000

The Slackers

The Slackers are a classic American band that is equal parts grit and grace. Their slow rise against the odds is a story of perseverance and a belief in their musical vision, what Vic likes to call, "Jamaican Rock N Roll." While they have been influenced, and even personally taught by Jamaican Ska/Reggae originators, like the Skatalites and the Upsetters (Original backing band for the Wailers), th...e band sees its music as an extension of the traditions of the United States. This band is equally appreciative of old Blues, Country, 60s Soul, Rock, and Rn'B as it is of Reggae, Rocksteady, Dub, and Ska. It is as if the Rolling Stones or the Yardbirds had grown up on Bob Marley as well as Muddy Waters. Smashing the stereotypes of "Ska" as happy, uptempo, and shallow music, the Slackers play with an aggressive edge and their songs veer in themes from the personal to the political. They can out jam any hippie band and outwrite most singer songwriters. From their 1996 release, Better Late Than Never through to 2010 with The Great Rocksteady Swindle, they have established themselves as America's premiere interpreters and innovators of Jamaican music and a pretty good rock band to boot. The Great Rocksteady Swindle (release date 4/20/10) is a songwriting tour de force with all band members contributing to its gutsy muscular sound. "Mr. Tragedy" references the Specials while "Boll Weevil" references Sam Sham & the Pharaohs. "Cheated" seethes with bitterness while "Thank You" offers the possibility of hope. As the band has matured you can't even tell anymore where the rock begins and the reggae ends, its become The Slackers. The band basically divides its recorded output into 2 categories. First of are their "albums", which are as Dave says with just a hint of his typical sarcasm, "these are our 'works' where we try to take over the universe." This steady stream includes Better Late Than Never (1996), Red Light (1997), The Question (1998), Wasted Days (2001), Close My Eyes (2003), Peculiar (2006), and Self Medication (2008). Back in 1996, the NY Times declared the Slackers to be part of "the sound of New York", a mantle they haven't given up since. Alternative Nation stated that their music is "protest music made for dim, sweaty basements, The Slackers would sound at home supporting Rancid as well as some grizzled New Orleans electric blues trio." The LA Weekly wrote about, "their unfettered energy, unerring skankability, and playful anger." Not content with letting the record industry dictate their output schedule, the band has also put out numerous eclectic and whimsical albums following their different interests of the moment. Slackers & Friends (2002) saw the band performing with some of their idols like The Congos, Glen Adams of the Upsetters, Cornell Campbell, and Doreen Schaeffer. International War Criminal EP (2004) was a bitter broadside against the Bush Administration. Afternoon in Dub (2005) is pure reggae bliss. Boss Harmony Sessions (2007) was a collaboration with DJ Boss Harmony who arranged and refiltered tracks in unorthodox ways. Lost & Found (2009) is a compilation of forgotten tracks, alternate versions, and remakes from the bands recording vaults. The band has also put out 3 live albums; Live At Ernestos (2000), Upsetting Ernestos (2005), Slack In Japan (2005), and 2 DVDs; The Slackers: A Documentary (2007) and Live at the Flamingo Cantina (2009). More recently, the band has started releasing their live concerts through www.whatevski.org and has plans for releasing more compilations digitally. This focus on the live show is not surprising because the Slackers have a good part of their existence on the road. Since 1997, the band has been doing around 110 shows a year. This includes some 20 major North American tours, 14 European tours, 3 Japanese tours and 2 Brazilian tours. They have played in 42 different US states, 6 Canadian provinces, 22 European countries, 5 Latin American nations, Turkey, Japan, and South Korea. They have appeared on the stages of the Warped Tour (1998), the Lowlands Festival (1999), Pukkelpop (1999, 2004), CMJ (2000), Montreal Jazz Festival (2000), the Bourges Festival (2001), the Dour Festival (2002, 2007), Deconstruction Tour (2004), Augustboller (2005), Streetbeat Festival (2005), Popkomm (1999,2006), Summerjam (2007), Mighty Sounds (2007), Ilosaarirock (2007) and Glastonbury (2008). They have opened for Rancid (1999,2003, 2006), Hepcat (1999), Joe Strummer (2002, 2003), Flogging Molly (2002), Jimmy Cliff (2002), the Beat (2002), Pennywise (2004), Toots & the Maytals (2005), The Pogues (2006), and John Spencer's Heavy Traffic (2007). They have sold out numerous headlining gigs including such venues as Bowery Ballroom (nyc), Slims (San Francisco, 3 times), Lee's Palace (Toronto, 2 times), The Garage (London), CBGBs (NYC, 2 nights in a row in 2006), Troubadour (LA, 3 times in 2006), the Knitting Factory (NYC, 5 times), the Melkweg (A-dam), SESC Pompeia (Sao Paolo, 2 nights in 2006), and the Loft (Tokyo). Hopefully, if you have read this far, you are starting to get the point that the Slackers are a phenomenon. A worldwide phenomenon. An underground band with a cult following, they can fill venues everywhere! The band has come a long way from their little dirty rehearsal studio on e.3rd street on the lower east side.
